Today we are going to be looking at Xenon Valkyrie+ as played on the Playstation 4 but also available on PS Vita, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch and PC. Developed by Diabolical Mind and published by Cowcat.
Xenon Valkyrie+ is a rogue-lite platformer game with RPG elements in which you must fight to the deepest part of a moon and halt the plans of a wicked witch. With a number of characters to choose from, weapons to collect to help you journey through the randomly generated levels meeting various characters and enemies that help tell the story around you.
When i first downloaded it i was excited because it has been a long time since I’ve played a rouge type game. But to have RPG elements implemented too was promising to me. The style of the game is very classic 16 bit-esqe but at the same time is very detailed within each scene.
So i jumped straight in to choosing the character with the most base health and I’m so glad i did that because I soon learned this really was for the hardcore gamer as I died and restarted 3 times in the space of 20 minutes. Oh yeah did I forget to mention it is also permadeath all of sudden I realised this is not a chill out and play game. Time to get serious Ryan.
So now i decided to start off with best base defence, you know basically picking a slightly easier mode. Not only that but this is where I learnt that each character has a unique ability too and now I have a triple jump, maybe even quadruple? Either was it was very high and helped massively avoiding certain enemies.
I suddenly felt very determined to at least get to first boss. Despite it been hard I felt like it was a duty to at least get to the first boss. So i became more strategic, I do not have to kill every enemy lets just get through the stages I told myself. And to my surprised it worked i was at the boss for the end of the beginning stage. Breathe Ryan you only have 4HP left, because I forgot to grab a health potion from the store. Now I’m just going to admit it, I lasted all of 10 seconds against the boss and yeah permadeath so see you later back to the start.
The look, style and music in the game is perfect with quality chip-tune music and colourful and detailed low bit scene invites you into the game and just for a second can help you continue playing when the difficulty is starting to stress you out and that says a lot about the style it works so well.
Now I don’t know if it was permadeath or not being use to the genre but i loved the game but struggled to play it, am i losing my touch ? maybe so , I have a feeling i’m just past the ‘hardcore’ games now but I’m not taking anything away from the game, if i had this game about 5 years ago i would of had the urge to finish it but with me now being a more relaxed gamer.
But if you want a challenge, something different, definitely consider this one. Currently on the PlayStation store for only £7.99 it does not make a hole in your pocket either.
Overall I’d say if you consider yourself a hardcore gamer or feel like game may not be as much as a challenge these days consider this, the beautiful style and music will pull you in and invite you to a very try, die, repeat game that will leave you wanting more while at the same time sending you crazy from the difficulty and permadeath.
