Today we are going to be taking a look at Vasilis by Marginal Act on PS4. My time with the game was mixed and had some interesting talking points so let’s get to it.
Vasilis is an hand drawn adventure in the style of a point and click game. You play as Vasilis who has just lost her husband. And lives in a city ravaged by riots, protesters and death.
Firstly I want to talk about the style of the game and how it looks. From the get go it was obvious it was one of the selling points for the game. Everything was hand drawn black and white, the feeling you were literally playing someone’s sketchbook doodles. I know it wouldn’t be to everyone’s taste but it helps the atmospherics of the game. Creating an almost eerie yet fitting aura.
With it hitting the notes of a point and click story adventure. The second topic I wanted to talk about was the story. Now initially it feels like you haven’t really been told much and you’re not quite sure what to do.
I mean for the first day I just walked round talking to everyone. Because I just either easily missed something or just didn’t get what I was doing. I would put this down as one of its downfalls that although once you get going it all goes alot smoother but with vague objectives from the get go could lead to players calling it quits early on. After I got through this patch though and dis the first few things it did become alot easier, again though this is because I had spent that much time wondering around talking to people that when the objective moved on I had already spoke to someone who mention the new objective.
On the technical side of the game I did feel like it was lacking in challenges. The objectives were basically the same pasted over with a new object. Also like I previously said the objectives could of pointed you in the right direction.
Also small changed could of been made like with it been hand drawn some objective items blended in so well that a player could easily keep mistaking them for just background design causing you to aimlessly walk around wondering where to get said item when it’s right in front of you. Totally didn’t happen to me…
Unfortunately due to a not so griping story and just lack of technical finishes I found it hard to love Vasilis. There was things I did love like the whole hand drawn vibe I'm always a fan of but I just feel like it didn't get smoothed over. Ultimately falling short of what could of been a nice little pick up.
