Yep, it’s that time of year again, F1 2020 has been out and about and for the most part, it’s a step forward in some places. Others are languishing somewhat. Whether it’s ideas that have the potential to be great with some small additions and changes here and there, or just not up to a good enough standard and needs a major revamp. Here is what I would like to see in F1 2021.
Much better Online
Does anyone suffer from Déjà vu? Well, I do every time I boot up online in the latest Codemasters F1 games. Getting a smooth online race is about as rare as positive thoughts from Ferrari fans this year, and this year was no different at all. Server connections are as fragile as hell, weird online bugs that happen on a fairly regular basis, and you can get penalised for avoiding accidents. Which is probably the nicest way I can put my feelings forward for the penalty system which is a bit crap.
When you do get Joe Blogs who does a million into your side pod and ruin your race because humanity will always want to fuck someone over for nothing. What’s not to say ghost the car that’s doing a million. Like what they’ve done on Forza Horizon 4. Sure it won’t fix the Griefing 100% but it would make it a less crappy place to experience.
In short, take a year out of adding new stuff if needs be, and just refine the core elements. Make sure online gets a lot of love from Codemasters, because so far, it’s progressed as far as an ant with heavy shopping.
Now, I love the classic cars in the game – I have always enjoyed driving them as well, but, a certain Mr Box has said in the past, and hurts me to agree with him on that one but there is no sustenance to the classic cars. In the past, I’ve always said that they should do an F1 game where you can partake in multiple different seasons. – Like F1 Challenge 99-02
Let’s say the hybrid years from 2014 till 2020, and all the tracks cars which should be easily done since it’s all be done in this current gen of consoles. And with the lastest systems for handling and ERS, it does sound like a decent recipe. That could stretch into a more in-depth career mode or even different championships to compete in. Maybe the classic cars may need a shift in dynamics to give it more sustenance. Sort of like how Hitman 2, you can also have the missions from the first game as well with the latest updates from Hitman 2.
Be able to manage your team from the pit wall in MyTeam Mode
The newest addition to Codemasters F1 games is the MyTeam Mode. Giving you the keys to running the newest F1 Team, and being one of the drivers as well. It’s a nice idea, but it’s too similar to the main career mode. Sure the idea is in the early stages, but if there is one thing I would include the option to run the team from the Pit Wall. The drivers get the limelight and all the fame and attention, but the Team Principals are also characters in this show. Yes, it’s a racing game through and through, but I think it would be a nice change of pace. Managing the team but also managing the drivers, from contract to even who gets a particular bit of R&D first and foremost. Or even making the tougher calls for team orders.
Also, one idea that I saw circulating the Twittersphere. As F1 2020 has introduced the FIFA Ultimate Team stats for all the drivers and even F2. So why not have the option to hire former drivers like Prost, Senna, Schumacher, Alonso (bit irrelevant I know, as he’s coming back), Hakkinen, Massa. It wouldn’t be fully authentic – but who plays video games just for realism? If that’s the case then Maradona would be a hell of a lot different if it’s meant to be realistic to today’s standards in FIFA 20’s Ultimate Team?
Add Formula 3
Look, I will always harp on about this forever, but I loved it when they Included Formula 2 back in F1 2019. Sure, it was the bare minimum, but it was progressing forward, and this year it’s the same again with the option to take part in a full F2 season. Shame it was as dry and quite dull when it’s just race after race with nothing else to complement it. Even a run in a classic car or even an FP1 appearance on a Race Weekend? But I would love to see Formula 3 included in a future Codies F1 game. It just adds more sustenance potentially for the future once optimized.
A proper scenario mode
I always have liked the idea of having scenarios to go through. Like for example from F1 2019: you as Lewis Hamilton in the last 10-15 laps or so of Hungarian GP hunting down Max Verstappen. They’ve done something like this before in old F1 games from Codemasters, particularly F1 2012 to 2014. Maybe even as they always included last year’s F2 Grid. Why not take Scenarios from that to play? and going even earlier by including previous years. That would be a treasure trove of scenario ideas. Such as playing as Lewis and trying to hold off Nico Rosberg in the last laps of the 2014 Bahrain GP, or Max Verstappen during Austria 2019 or even Spain 2016.
