I’ve never really been a big fan of golf, or the games to be honest, but in the last 12 months, I have found myself wanting to take the sport up. Having purchased my first set of clubs, I look at them, wondering what on earth I have to do, and which clubs to use at what times. So I have had a look on the playstation store to find the most recent golf game, and came across HB Studios’ The Golf Game 2019.
Now, I have played the EA Sports’ Tiger Woods game in the past, but doing some research into The Golf Game 2019, I found that HB Studios acquired the PGA Tour Licence, also with the help of 2K Sports, they really have made a great game. Whilst it can be frustrating at times, when you miss hit that shot from the tee, or just slightly miss that eagle putt, but that’s what golf is all about.
You start The Golf Game 2019 with a tutorial to walk you through the basics. Once I had gone through them, and understood them, I played a couple of practise rounds, and depending on the course, I ended up with somewhere between +20 and -3. You really do get punished if you hit the ball in the rough, and rewards you for hitting that perfect shot onto the fairway. It is possible to hit some great shots from out of the rough, but you have to make sure you get the right club, taking into account the wind, ball position and other obstacles (I did get stuck behind a fence at one point). But even then, you have to perfectly time your swing, otherwise your next shot will be a tough one.
What I found that really makes The Golf Club really special was it lets the game of golf be the star of the show, without throwing out crazy systems or gimmicks. So after a few practice rounds, I created my character, and started the PGA Tour career. Like other games, you start off the career in the minor leagues on the Web.com tour, and you have to work your way up to be on the PGA tour. The game really makes you work on its mechanics and any sort of levelling up system. I loved how the core mechanics worked in this game, and there really isn’t much else to it. In fact, outside of cosmetics you don’t have any ways of upgrading your players skills.
The more I played the game, the better I got, and the more I really enjoyed the games mechanics. Swinging the club is done with whichever analogue stick you prefer, and is measured on both the backswing and upswing. You need to carry a consistent momentum from up to down to get the most out of your swing. The higher the difficulty, the more precise you need to be with each stroke. I found the game to be challenging even on the easy setting I had chosen.
If I had to nit pick for something from The Golf Club, it would come down to the presentation. The games commentary which is rudimentary at best. I found myself as I went on, just muting the game, and putting on some music instead. There are 6 officially licensed courses on this game, which they have been beautifully made. You also have the option to build and create your own course, which I found fun, and far more than I expected from the title.
The Golf Game 2019
I found myself going a lot further that I expected, and found that I just wanted to carry on playing, and getting further into the career. If you are looking for a great golf game, then really don’t look any further than The Golf Club 2019.
