The Culling has had a bumpy history, fading in and out of the public eye, and now it seems destined for the grave. In a post on its website, Josh Van Veld; Director of Operations announced the news.
The Culling briefly attempted to run as a free-to-play game. Dropping the price tag in November 2018, however it proved difficult to save the sinking ship. With the emergence of Loot Box scandals, players at the time were more wary of in-game purchases.
“When we launched the Origins update and made the game free to play, our hope was that the revenue generated from in-app purchases would be enough to sustain our team and support ongoing development, but unfortunately that was not the case.”
Veld continued on to say that “Even with thousands of active daily users, the revenue was only a fraction of what our dev team required to continue daily operations.” which forced the the developer to reduce the team.
The Culling will shut down on the 15th of May 2019, with the game being removed from stores as soon as possible afterwards. Veld ended with“While it’s sad for us to say goodbye, we want to offer a sincere and heartfelt thank you to everyone who has enjoyed the game,”.
