Dropping in literally out of nowhere, Scavengers has given us our first tease of footage; and Announcement Trailer from the 2018 Game Awards. This will be the first real set of footage we’ve seen for the game, even if it is just cinematic, and is there so Midwinter can say “We’re still here guys!”.
For those who are saying “WTF is Scavengers?”, it’s a co-operative survival competition style game being created and developed by around 24 people who have come from all backgrounds of gaming; Battlefield, Halo, Destiny and Call of Duty are just some of the games the group have had the chance to work on in previous years. Now they have come together to produce something unique. Scavengers is set up to be both PVP and PVE within its hostile world, which has taken inspiration from Halo 5’s Warzone game mode. So, we can expect to see both enemy players and enemy AI entering the fray.
So, the trailer. We start off in space, showing us a moon clearly destroyed by something, or someone. As we pan out, a planet and a nearby space station come into view. Maybe all life is not lost just yet? Definitely a futuristic setting though from the start, and I got some real Destiny vibes from the destroyed moon as well. Also note the huge storm covering the planet’s surface as well. A good indication that the environment and weather could affect how the game’s mechanics work as well.
Suddenly, we are welcomed with our first glimpse of life, and we now have 4 human survivors running for the space stations drop pods to make contact with the planet. They are dressed in a mixture of armour and rags, looking like they are as ready as they can be for both combat and the cold storm below. So, we can get an idea on what our character/characters will look like in the game.
Next, the drop pods are launched and the plucky 4 are sent thundering towards the planet’s surface. Judging by their expressions and faces, it may not be everyone’s first time. It’s a rocky landing for one as her pod clips a cliff, taking damage and plundering into the snow. So why is this important? It could be a feature in which this is how we spawn into each game; using a station’s drop pods and being launched onto the planet’s surface.
As the rest of the pods land, we can see it’s quite a barren setting, desolate with icy winds and thick blanket of snow, but there are features which prove that this is a world which has been inhabited by humans or life before, such as the power lines and tower that can be seen in the panning shot. We also get our first glimpse of weaponry as well; a sniper rifle, which looks both ‘scavenged ‘ and advance technology as well, due to the style of the scope and the various bands wrapped around the body. It appears it’s not just firearms either; in a bird’s eye view shot of the 3 walking together, the woman on the right is holding a crossbow.
As the 3 meet up with their final compadre, it becomes clear that technology will play a big part in the game. He has a small drone flying close by his shoulder, although it’s exact purpose is slightly unclear, as it’s only used to highlight the sign he finds. He points to it which reads ‘Welcome to Cascade Springs’, our first glimpse of a named location on the planet. A screech in the distance draws the band towards it, and we get to glimpse at a close quarters shotgun. This game is indeed intended for bloody combat.
A final series of expanded shots reveals the band’s true objective; to investigate the huge, alien asteroid that has collided, generating what appears to be valuable crystals or some form of energy perhaps. Could it be that very resource that cause the moons destruction in the first scene? What is its purpose? I think it will be something other players will be fighting heavily over for during the game.
So some exciting and important features to take away from just the Announcement Trailer, but what do you guys think?
