A handheld version could be on the cards, to rival the handheld gaming experience of the Nintendo Switch. This comes to light after a patent application was filed by Microsoft on 9 July 2019.
According to the patent application, the Xbox handheld attaches to, and charges, an existing touchscreen device, like a smartphone. The joypads are clipped to the phone case in a bid to offer console-style gaming. It’s unclear if the console would play mobile games, or scaled down Xbox games.
As this patent was filed recently, it’s not confirmed how close we will get to actually seeing this handheld Xbox, but it is worth noting that companies routinely apply for patents that never become real products.
