Due to the unique circumstances we live in, lots of things have been called off due to Coronavirus. However, fortunately, the folks down at Gamescom didn’t share that same idea and instead changed the show to a more digital experience. Like the busy bee that I am, or the overworked masseur trying to give everyone “happy endings”, I’ve managed to catch up on the opening night stream and here is all the lovely stuff that was shown off – and it’s a lot.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Monday
Unless you’ve been living in the challenger deep, and honestly why haven’t you? Call of Duty is returning to the Cold War. All the characters from the series, Mason, Hudson and Woods return along with a few new faces. This time chasing mythical soviet agent “Perseus” who’s got a plan in taking down the US and A. Even president Ronald Regan makes an appearance to give his blessing in taking him down. but given his record in clandestine operations, it would be not wrong not to have reservations on that. More stuff on the Multiplayer will be coming on September 9th.
Unknown 9: Awakening
There was some newly announced stuff from the boys and girls down at Reflector Entertainment with their new IP Unknown 9: Awakening. Which going by the trailer, which is pre-rendered, has a paranormal side of things when a kid on the streets of India (according to the game synopsis she is called Haroona) is about to get a beating from some kids – who turns out can slow the perception of time.
A mentor then helps her to control her powers and be able to access a dimension called the Fold. Expecting a taste of the paranormal and maybe a dash of conspiracy theories in this case. With ambitions to make a multimedia universe out of this with books, comics and podcasts, if their website has anything to say about that.
Doom Eternal: The Ancient Gods: more things to rip and tear? Lovely.
Gamescom offered us a look into the upcoming DLC for the very excellent Doom Eternal. Titled “The Ancient Gods” which, as probably the title suggests an Ancient God has awoken and Mr Doom Slayer Esq. has to put him down. Hard. That’s not all with new locales and new demons to rip and tear through like they were smarties, although that bit with the twin marauders? That’s going to be fun and tricky.
It’s coming on October 20th and I’m very much looking forward to that one. Oh, and Doom Eternal will also get a free upgrade to next-gen consoles. Nice.
Dragon Age 4: I’ve got my Mojo back, Bioware?
Bioware, particularly during the current-gen of consoles, have had it rough lately. With Mass Effect Andromeda being a bit “meh” and Anthem just flopping. So, it’s the turn of the Dragon Age series to help give Bioware its mojo back. With this behind the scenes look at the development so far, they look like they are on the right track, and they showed off some new characters in Bellaria and Davrin – and the return of Fan Favourite you may love to hate, Solas.
World of Warcraft: Shadowlands
Also, everyone’s favourite MMO that should be classified as a 2nd job – World of Warcraft, and it’s got a release date for its upcoming expansion Shadowlands. Which originally was announced back at Blizzcon 2019 – For October 27th, which will bring 5 new realms to explore. An ever-changing Dungeon called the Tower of the Damned and an all-new levelling system.
Star Wars Squadrons: Highway to the danger zone
Star Wars Squadrons (Star Wars meets Ace Combat in case you have been asleep, but luckily I’ve covered that already with this handy article ), this also made an appearance on opening night. Showcasing the single-player campaign which as previously noted and reminded once more, takes place after the events of Return of the Jedi, and playing as both sides of the conflict, Empire and the Rebels.
With a look at how the mission will play out with a briefing and a debrief once the mission is done and done, and also like clockwork, will have cameos from Wedge Antillies and possibly Princess Leia. Also, there was a bit of VR gameplay shown as well and it does look Dapper. It would be good to see if this could be applied to the rest of the game.
Coming to consoles and PC on October 2nd with cosplay as well, it could be a good one.
12 Minutes: a Jedi, a Mutant and a Green Goblin walk into a room.
Remember last year at Microsoft’s conference at E3 of a game called 12 Minutes? Well, I didn’t until now. Putting aside my terrible memory for a moment, 12 Minutes is from ex Rockstar and Ubisoft artist Luis Antonio. Where we play as the husband who is stuck in a murder mystery loop that lasts 12 minutes. Think Majora’s Mask meets Memento. Then again, it looks interesting and the cast is also pretty damn good.
James McAvoy, Daisy Ridley and Willem Dafoe all lend their vocal talents to the project. Expected this year on Xbox Series X, Xbox One and PC, and hopefully, for Willem Dafoe after this, we can forget about Beyond: Two Souls – okay?
Fall Guys Season 2: Going medieval on ya ass
There was a look at the upcoming Season 2 content for Fall Guys AKA. The game you’re playing right now, with new rounds to play and new costumes with a Middle Ages flavour to them. No date for when Season 2 will be coming.
DIRT 5 create your Playgrounds
Also, there was an appearance of DIRT 5 which is slowing making its way up my estimations and hype levels. With a new feature announced where players can create their very own levels, from checkpoint races to tyre shredding Gymkhana levels and smash attack which is to smash all the objects as fast as you can. It does look very, VERY tasty it must be said.
Coming out on October 16th on current and next-gen consoles and PC.
Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart
Keeping with the next-gen theme with Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart. Following on from its grand debut at the PS5 showcase earlier in the year with a more in-depth look. With the previous villain, Dr Nefarious returning. And how the Rifts work in-game whether it’s gameplay or even moving from one level to another seamlessly. Out of the upcoming next-gen games from 1st party devs, I would say this one is the pick of the bunch. Still not sold on the dream of the next-gen consoles yet, but this one does look very good, and it’s a launch title for the PS5 as well. Lovely.
The return of Medal of Honor
Now, for all you young whippersnappers out there who probably think that Medal of Honor is a new IP from EA. Then you’re terribly mistaken, when in fact if it wasn’t for this series in particular Call of Duty may not have existed at all. Medal of Honor game is back this time in VR which takes us from D-day to behind enemy lines. Working with the French resistance and putting a stop to the Nazis secret weapons programs. It does contain lots of shooting, stabbing and twatting nazis, and it looks like an absolute hoot.
Coming out towards the end of the year and will release for the Oculus Rift. So, maybe it’s time to dust off the old Facebook Account one last time.
And everything else announced
There was a gameplay reveal for Little Nightmares 2 which if going by the previous game is going to be creepy as hell, and comes with a February 2021 launch date. A Star Wars Themed expansion for the Sims 4 coming September 8th. Age of Empires 3: Definitive Edition now has a release date of October 15th. A launch trailer for Surgeon Simulator 2, which is out right now. Another look at the upcoming Destiny 2 expansion: beyond light, with a particular look at its stasis powers. Coming November 10th, and a launch trailer for Struggling, which is out right now.
