Sony Interactive Entertainment has dropped a big bombshell in the gaming world following the shock announcement that they would not be attending E3 2019. They won’t be planning any offsite shows during the time. The Senior Vice President of Communications, Jennifer Clark told Game Informer of the decision.
“PlayStation fans mean the world to us and we always want to innovate, think differently and experiment with new ways to delight gamers. As a result, we have decided not to participate in E3 in 2019. We are exploring new and familiar ways to engage our community in 2019 and can’t wait to share our plans with you.”
When asked about hosting off-site events, similar to EA events in the past, Clark plainly stated that “We will not activate or hold a press conference around E3.” Whilst Sony’s presence at E3 was not as extravagant as others, it is still considered to be a cornerstone of the convention.
However, this might be a sign of what is to come. Due to the readily available use of broadband internet, and the availability of streaming sites, publishers aren’t as reliant on live shows like E3. For now, the other major players still remain committed to the show, and the show will still take place next year, June 11-13 in Los Angeles.
