Colin McRae: Dirt was released back in the wonderful year of 2007 (any year looks wonderful compared to the garbage bin of 2020). The game was the start of a totally new era for the Dirt series, as it reworked everything from the ground up: completely new physics engine, new sound, lighting and a new engine to run it all on – lovely stuff.
The career mode was extremely interesting and entertaining, as it followed 11 different tiers of rallying, each tier having its down event in a different type of car in its own championship, it was fun, engaging and entertaining, everything you want in a rally game.
Why isn’t it higher on the list? Well, it was good for the time, but trying to play it now it really does show its age and it is almost unplayable just 13 years on. If you can get past that though, it is good to see how far the series has come.
