In the ye old days playable demos were the main way for players to get hold of the latest offerings from your favorite developers, and to have a small idea on what their latest title was going to be like. Looking back at the really good days, some of these demos were found in magazines and you could play them to your heart’s content – creating iconic gaming childhood memories, and back then there was none of this “Open Beta” nonsense. Now, demos in magazines is a memory, but there has been an influx of playable demos that have come across my desk and here is my pick of the bunch.
Up next in the series, is the return of more violence with a return of the good old Beat ‘em up genre – for the twenty-first century, with 9 Monkeys of Shaolin from Buka Entertainment. While playing as a simple fisherman just making his way through medieval China, Wei Cheng. Who after his village gets rinsed by pirates and left for dead via the old unwinnable boss battle card. After being faced with that card, he is then saved by some Shaolin monks. It’s here where the quest starts for some payback and also picking up a few tricks from the monks themselves.
The game itself is 2.5D and it’s very stylized. Heavily influenced by the Kung-Fu movies of the 70s and it’s a blast to play and fun to slug it out against pirates and bandits. This style all mixes well, and looks very nice. It will also have co-op which for a Beat ‘em up is practically the law when it comes to the genre RPG upgrade trees.
Out on October 16th on PC and Consoles, and definitely, one to watch if you’re yearning for more of the likes of back in the day of Golden Axe or more recently the revival of Streets of Rage.
