They say good things come to those who wait, and with daemonical, patience is a required virtue. Hello and welcome to XNVR I am James, and today we will be reviewing the early access horror multiplayer, Daemonical.
Created by small indy developer Fearem games, Daemonical is an atmospheric multiplayer only first person survival horror game. Set on an abandoned island shrouded in dense woodland with small camps and buildings dotted around the landscape. it is the objective of the four human players to complete some sort of satanic ritual in order to survive the night, desperately gathering bones scattered in the darkness. But they are not alone, a fifth human came with them and has become something else altogether, lurking through the mist a daemonic presence seeks to thwart their efforts, and rip their very souls from their bodies.
To survive, it is important to gather tools and weapons to help ward off the monster. Light and fire can hurt the beast for a brief moment, while pistols can buy you a better chance at survival. As time goes on the demon grows more powerful, with abilities and attributes that can be unlocked as time passes or with humans slain.
The game does a great job at setting atmosphere and giving a real sense of terror when confronted with the demon face to face. It is also incredibly easy to learn as you have a scar that acts as your compass when finding ritual parts, and the sound design and lighting change as death becomes imminent.
But with any early access games, this one has some pretty big drawbacks. The game is noticeably dead in terms of player base at this time, it can take quite a while to get a game going, so much so that you will likely need to visit their discord server just to see if you can rally together a team.
It is also lacking in terms of content, which again is something you almost always see with the early access games. After about an hour I am done seeing the same environment and set pieces being used repeatedly. But oddly this is a game that I do keep coming back to. Very few horror games have me checking my back as much as this one, the creepy use of manikins and eery noises put me on the edge of my seat. It is also nice to see a community for a game that is not entirely toxic or filled with asshats, I feel this is helped in part with how involved the developers are with their players and how active and friendly their discord server is.
I would love to see what this game looks like down the road out of early access and I hope to see more variety added before that point.
