Ratalaika are back at it again with another Midnight special. This Golf-like game has you hitting your 70 gloriously illustrated levels as you are engulfed by the earth just before your birthday. Your plot is straight forward, reach the top of the surface by making your way through multiple types of obstacles that stand in your way.

Birthday of Midnight is one of those games that is very easy to pick up and play. I mean this literally! It has only two buttons to press, A and Y plus the directional button to aim where you want Midnight to go. Pretty simple and straightforward instructions.

That being said, even though seeing on multiple YouTube videos this whole game being completed in around 30 minutes or less, I actually took my time to go through the levels. This is probably because my aim wasn’t that good but nonetheless, there were times I found some levels a bit of a challenge.

The level design for each level varies as you go through. There are some that are easier than others as each level has different obstacles and boundaries within its area. Its playing field is very simplistic which some people may say is a good thing and I would agree. However, others might say it lacks just that little more creative design to make it really stand out. I must admit I agree to both these statements.

I do think an extra dose of different challenges or puzzles could have been introduced somehow just to make each level slightly harder than that before it. I do think this is more of a quick 1000g Achievement or Trophies game.

The background sound design is lovely and pleasant. Even when you die or have to reset, that deep hit note of the piano is funny at the start. It made me giggle every time I heard it.

I love the spooky feel it has gone on. I suppose being underground it would be quite creepy, but it really adds a sense of depth to the game.

The Review

Birthday of Midnight

4.4 Score

Overall I have enjoyed playing this quick game and want to thank Ratalaika for supplying me a code so I could do a review. There are some elements it could improve on but to be honest, for this little title and the price it's at, it most probably wouldn’t be worth it.

PROS

  • Quick and easy completion
  • Very easy control
  • Child friendly Gaming

CONS

  • Obstacles could be harder
  • Levels should get progressively harder as you progress through
  • Adding in different challenges could make it more interesting

Live on the Isle of Wight with my Wife and Child. Waiting to start training him into playing video games like me. I have been into video games since a very young age. I enjoy a good RPG with a good story but don't mind playing other games to see what the hold.
