Area 86 has landed on our systems created by a small team called SimDevs. They have brought us a Physics-based Escape Room Puzzle game where you take control of a tiny robot to push, pull, pick, throw, activate or destroy to escape each room. The background story is, the secret station AI of where you are goes rogue and it’s up to your little robot to stop it!
The game itself is very well thought out but basic enough that it’s not overly difficult to complete each escape room. Don’t get me wrong, each level comes with an increased degree of difficulty when it comes to puzzles but this is what keeps it interesting. Embedded in each level is various tasks that can be completed. They can be completed in any way you see fit. I could do it completely different to someone else who plays this game. This is a nice feature as typically, each playthrough could be slightly different.
Objectives or tasks are not all necessary to escape the room, but you are giving them at the start as you can regularly check them throughout to see which ones you have completed and ones you haven’t. You don’t have to complete them all to finish the level.
The gameplay runs smoothly with its very sensitive control input and to navigate your robot around the room, but the little bits of sound effects when breaking glass or moving boxes etc. Add to the overall fun-ness of the game. Everything in each room makes a certain effect which is a really good touch.
The level design and the puzzles within them have been very thought out to the point they had me stumped. It doesn’t take much in all fairness, however, you are helped along the way with various signs and markings dotted around each level to give you clues or to send you on a wrong path. It is good to have this level of detail in it as it makes the puzzle escape room even more interestingly difficult which overall adds to the enjoyment of playing Area 86.
One thing that is frustrating is there aren’t many levels at the moment to work your way through, however, more are apparently coming soon. Each level is different in size and requires you to do various tasks to escape. You don’t have to complete them all, especially as in some, there are other robots you can rescue. You don’t have to rescue them if you don’t want to as you get an achievement for doing both. Handy for those achievement/trophy hunters out there.
Area 86 is a fun little puzzle game that is intriguing and intuitive in its overall state of play. It is a fun game for kids and adults alike to play if they are interested in escape room puzzle games.
