We’ve come back to that time again where F1 2019 hits the grid, the latest in the series of games that replicates the sport that’s close to my heart. While there are improvements here and there and additions like Formula 2, but there are aspects that need massive improvements upon. So, here are my top 5 things that F1 2020 needs to improve on 2019. I could have gone for 10 but I’m trying to write, not rant.
Let’s not beat around the bush with this one, the Online Multiplayer is fucking terrible. From connecting to servers, a penalty system that is as bad as the real-life F1 stewards, i.e penalise attempts at racing and not penalise unsportsmanlike behaviour like sideswiping or deliberately using me as a brake. It’s just a frustrating experience most of the time, and F1 2019 is more than less carries on from this. Okay, the addition of leagues is a nice idea, but an esports section that’s mainly hyperlinks is a bit pointless for the game. For 2020, this needs an overhaul and dedicated servers and a penalty system that punishes the right people. It’s still the frustrating experience from nearly 4 years ago and really haven’t budged an inch from this.
Now, while I thoroughly enjoyed the idea of a dedicated multiplayer car in which we can personalise, it only comes with preset livery with customizable colours. The rest of it is getting rather tiresome, the same preset faces for nearly 3 years and crash helmets to customize. Now is the time to go deeper with this: a fully customizable character, so, hairstyles, eye colours – the lot. I want to be playing as myself, not as someone who looks a bit like myself, and fully customizable crash helmets is badly needed. I mean look at the latest MotoGP game that also coincidentally does this, and it works really well. So, why not in F1? Add some more personality to the game, and also the multiplayer car could also be fully customizable.
Classic Tracks and Cars and Formula 3
I’m probably the only one here who likes classic cars, and would like to see this expanded upon with more cars particularly the 50s, 60s and the 80s. I enjoy the challenge of driving them but also from a fans perspective of seeing the cars change from the front engine cars from the 50s to 2020.
Classic tracks would be a nice idea to complement the classic cars. As 20-21 tracks can be quite tedious after a while, and as some circuits are no longer on the calendar like Malaysia, India, Korea, Valencia, Nürburgring, or classic interpretations of current circuits like Silverstone, Spa, Hockenheim, Catalunya, and even the Nordschleife at the Nürburgring would be a nice addition to the series. It’s not new ground as f1 2013 did this already, but one which would be nice to revisit.
As I was tremendously happy to see Formula 2 being added to the game, it is probably plausible to see Formula 3 being added to the series as well, and I for one would like that. From the career mode right to adding more cars to drive about and race in. It’s a logical next step from this year at least.
The invitational events in career mode are boring. Fun distractions but boring. So, why not add scenarios to which we can play out? From last year stuff like Sebastian Vettel during the last 20 laps of the British GP or Lewis Hamilton at the German GP, or even Max Verstappen from this year’s Austrian GP. There is plenty of material out there to create a series of scenarios for us to play through. The Senna Vs Prost DLC that accompanied with the game itself was a huge opportunity to do something like this but ended up just being more invitational events. It was just a gut punch for me as a fan and almost veering on insulting.
Now, last and not least is career mode and the first thing is to actually play through a full Formula 2 season, and not a greatest hits addition of 3 or 4 scenarios. Sure, have that for folks who want to get through it quickly to get to F1. It would have been nicer to have the option to do a full Formula 2 season.
While it’s nice to see that driver transfers are included, could this be stretched to F2 as well? Because as an example – Kimi Raikkonen has won 1 F1 championship and 21 races and is on the brink of hitting the lofty heights of 40. Now, I like Kimi but I would suspect that maybe 2, 3 years down the line that he is going to retire from the sport so why not have this in the game itself? and bring some of the young guns from F2 to F1.
Lastly, it would be cool to see the media side of career mode expand with news stories of driver transfers and who has said what about you in the media. While it sort of been introduced in this years career mode. It’s a bit chintzy and needs a bit more pantomime if you ask me. Take from last year the Verstappen and Occon incident from Brazil and the fallout from it, or when Mark Webber called Grosjean an Idiot after the Japanese GP in 2012. Basically, if I crashed into a fellow driver while racing in career mode. It would be nice to see a news clipping reacting to this, try and make the drives more human and not just punching bags.
