So since Borderlands 3 launched worldwide it is literally all I have played on my PS4. And as an overall consensus I personally think its brilliant and can’t get enough right now. So today we are going to look at 5 things the return of the series has done right and also 5 things done wrong or could do with improving.
So let’s start off with the positive shall we.
Keeping to its DNA
First up keeping with its roots. Now I’ll explain what I mean because I have seen a lot of reviews actually use this as a reason to score low and mediocre scores. But coming back to Borderlands I was overjoyed to see the same art style but cleaner and more detailed, a crap load of loot and a semi grind to go with it, toilet humour and dad jokes. These things I expected and hoped and prayed they did not change and mess with much because otherwise it simply would lose its identity as a borderlands. Losing these would be like MMO games taking out raids, Call of duty taking alot of multiplayer elements out or The sims taking the house building side out. It’s what belongs to the game and anyone saying they have outgrown the ‘humour’ what did you honestly expect? some PC kid friendly type game? Gimme a break.
The second thing I believe Borderlands 3 does well and has expanded this time round is customisation. Now Borderlands has always had different skins and head to change around to make you look far from bog standard but now there’s additions to that to make your character feel more for you. For example you still have skins and heads but now you can change the colour schemes for your skins to whatever you like, skins for guns to change you up favourite loot (pre order butt stallion skin is awesome), little trinkets to hang from your guns like ‘charms’ off rainbow six siege, emotes, echo skins. Most would deem these little changes and yes they are but I believe anything to make you feel more like that character is yours and not just another version of that character which you could see elsewhere is a nice touch in my opinion.
Any Borderlands fan will tell you that the sheer content in the games is a reason to buy alone, especially in a day filled with microtranactions and loot boxes we all long for games with just pure already paid for content. Borderlands 3 is just that at the time of writing I am currently on about chapter 15 and I do not feel close to the end, the size of the areas you load in to are great full of enemies, details, loot and easter eggs. You can play the game and always feel you have something to go see. The amount of side missions is still high you really can tell that the guys and gals at gearbox have really amped up content in Borderlands 3 not to mention there is 4 DLC packs going too which playing borderlands 2 DLC I just want to say are well worth the money in terms of content too.
While I personally rate Borderlands 3 as it stands as a solid 9/10 unfortunately it does have its problems.
And the first negative is a no brainer and this is a clear problem across all platforms and that is performance. Now granted yes it is a big game and it is hard these days to release a big or open world game without its problems and Borderlands 3 is no exception. These range from frame rate issues to to in game menus taking awfully long to load. These aren’t too bad but at times you find yourselves needing to be on and off your inventory fast and the load times can cause problems not to mention I have had it once give me a playstation error and close the app during one session. Hopefully more updates are just round the corner as the game is still young.
Now granted the gearbox team are giving away plenty at the moment in terms of gold keys hut what is really grinding my gearbox (get it) is at the moment they only have ‘a few hours’ before they expire and with me living in the UK they tend to be during US prime which for us is like midnight to 6am and we miss out on a lot simply because of time difference not every can afford to game all the way through the night anymore. I know this isn’t essential and is just a bonus but we shouldn’t be penalised for sleeping. Simply give the keys 24 hours at least and post them everywhere even in game therefore if you don’t spend your life on social media you can still get them.
Lack of fast travel points
NNow this isn’t necessarily a really bad point but in some areas you find yourself trekking through waves and waves of enemies because of the story, pick up some side missions along the way only to find that later on when you come back to do said side mission it’s right in the middle of that area after waves and waves of enemies again now I mean killing things is cool and all but if you are like me sometimes you just want that side mission gone you just want it done as soon as possible. And makes you realise especially areas with vehicles that some areas are just simply too big to have one fast travel location.
And that is it for this one guys I hope to see you in borderlands causing mayhem if you ever want to play together I am on PS4 and as always make sure to like, follow and obey (borderlands 3 reference) to XNVR on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Twitch.
